Ben Johns had lost to Zane Navratil once in 12 previous meetings, according to the tour. The second came on Friday in Da Nang, in a semifinal, and it has put the sport's biggest name in a bronze medal match.
Friday's semifinals
Armaan Bhatia (IND) and Navratil (USA) beat top seeds Johns (USA) and Dekel Bar (ISR) 11-4, 8-11, 13-11. Liz Truluck (USA) pulled off her own upset in Women's Singles, denying Kaitlyn Christian (USA) a shot at back-to-back titles, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, after Christian had led 8-1 and 9-5 in the decider. It is the 25-year-old's first PPA final.
Sahra Dennehy (AUS) continued her week of upsets, beating Roos van Reek (NED) 11-3, 6-11, 11-4 to avenge last week's loss in Malaysia. Vietnam locked up the Men's Singles gold in advance: Phuc Huynh beat Thomas Yu (CHN) 11-7, 11-5 and Hien Truong edged Hoang Nam Ly 5-11, 11-9, 11-6.

The finals
The Women's Singles final is between two players chasing a first PPA singles gold. Dennehy knocked Truluck out of last week's Malaysia Cup and starts as the favourite; for Truluck it is a first final of any kind. The Men's Singles final keeps the silverware in Vietnam whichever way it goes, Huynh against Truong.
Men's Doubles gold pits Friday's giant-killers Bhatia and Navratil against Tyson McGuffin (USA) and Eric Oncins (BRA), who want back-to-back Cup titles. In Women's Doubles, Christian and Chao Yi Wang (TPE), last week's champions, meet Ting Chieh Wei (TPE) and Alix Truong (USA). The Mixed Doubles final is Alix and Jonathan Truong (USA) against Wang and McGuffin, so Wang, Alix Truong and McGuffin are each in two finals. Johns and Bar face Vanshik Kapadia and Harsh Mehta (IND) for the Men's Doubles bronze, and Christian plays van Reek for the Women's Singles bronze after both let winning positions slip in their semifinals.

Huynh won a second straight home title, beating Truong 11-1, 11-4 in front of what the tour called a world-record pickleball crowd. Dennehy beat Truluck 11-5, 11-7 for her first singles gold. McGuffin and Oncins came back from a game down to beat Bhatia and Navratil 5-11, 11-9, 11-0 for a second straight Cup title, Christian and Wang went back to back in Women's Doubles 11-8, 11-8, and the Truong siblings won Mixed Doubles 11-1, 11-6. Johns and Bar took the Men's Doubles bronze 11-9, 9-11, 11-9. Ly received the Men's Singles bronze by walkover after Yu withdrew, and van Reek's bronze came when Christian retired at 11-6, 11-0.
