Ly v Truong for gold, Waters and Johns chase a double: MB Hanoi Cup Championship Sunday preview

Hoang Nam Ly and Hien Truong will play the Men's Singles final in Hanoi. It is Vietnam's third all-Vietnamese final on the tour after Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang last year, but the first between these two, the first at a PPA Asia 1000, and the first in the capital.

Saturday's semifinals

Truong (VIE) beat top seed Federico Staksrud (ARG) 11-7, 4-11, 11-5, avenging December's loss to the same player in the Hangzhou bronze playoff. He meets Ly (VIE), who cruised past Dylan Frazier (USA) 11-5, 11-6 and is chasing back-to-back golds after his Hangzhou title.

Brooke Buckner (USA) upset top seed Kate Fahey (USA) 11-9, 6-11, 11-6 in the Women's Singles semifinals, on Fahey's tour debut, and meets Kaitlyn Christian (USA), the reigning Panas Malaysia Cup champion in the event. Christian and Christian Alshon (USA) beat Anna Bright and Hayden Patriquin (USA) 11-9, 11-8 to reach the Mixed Doubles final, where Ben Johns, who beat them in the Malaysia Cup final with Bright, waits with Anna Leigh Waters.

Waters and Bright kept their Women's Doubles run going with an 11-3, 11-2 win over Tina Pisnik (SLO) and Jessie Irvine (USA), and meet Tyra Black (USA) and Catherine Parenteau (CAN) in the final. The Men's Doubles final is a top-two-seed meeting between Gabriel Tardio (BOL) and Johns and Patriquin and Staksrud; the same players crossed paths earlier in the Mixed Doubles semifinals, where Johns and Waters beat Black and Tardio 11-6, 11-9.

The finals

Christian holds a 9-4 career edge over Buckner, per the tour, though their last three meetings have all been bronze medal matches, and Buckner is in her first PPA Tour Asia final on debut. Waters and Bright, an 18-gold partnership that has never lost a final according to the tour, meet Black and Parenteau for the first time, having already ended Chao Yi Wang's unbeaten Asia doubles record in the quarterfinals.

Johns and Tardio, with 12 PPA golds together, face Staksrud and Patriquin, who have won four. It is Tardio's Asia debut and Johns' third Men's Doubles final appearance on tour without a gold. Ly leads Truong 3-1 in their meetings, per the tour, but this is their first final after two bronze playoffs and two semifinals. In Mixed Doubles, Johns and Waters, a partnership the tour credits with 47 golds, face Alshon and Christian in only the pair's second tournament together.

Ly went back to back, beating Truong 11-5, 11-6 for the first PPA Asia 1000 Men's Singles title. Christian saved the Women's Singles final from a game down, 7-11, 14-12, 11-9 over Buckner. Waters won both her finals: Women's Doubles with Bright 11-7, 11-5 over Black and Parenteau, and Mixed Doubles with Johns 11-5, 11-2 over Alshon and Christian. Johns finally got his Men's Doubles gold in Asia, with Tardio, 11-0, 7-11, 11-6 over Patriquin and Staksrud. Frazier beat Staksrud 11-8, 13-11 for the Men's Singles bronze and Fahey beat Wang 14-12, 13-11 for the women's.
