Singapore to Build 50 New Multi-Purpose Courts to Meet Surging Pickleball Demand

The move comes as ActiveSG reports a utilization rate of over 90% during peak hours, with pickleball bookings alone increasing tenfold between 2023 and 2025.

One of the most unique developments for a pickleball court in Singapore is the newly opened facility at the Little India Bus Terminal (ActiveSG Courts @ Farrer Park).

  • The Concept: Eight sheltered courts have been retrofitted into a section of the operating bus terminal.
  • Operational Hours: The courts are available Monday to Saturday, from 9 am to 9 pm. On Sundays, the space reverts to its original use as a bus terminal to serve migrant worker transport needs.
  • Significance: This project, a collaboration between SportSG and the Land Transport Authority (LTA), demonstrates Singapore’s strategy of repurposing underutilized urban spaces (like those under flyovers and viaducts) to bring sports closer to the community.

Managing the "Pop" Noise

While the sport's growth is celebrated, it has brought challenges, specifically regarding the distinct "pop" sound of the paddle hitting the ball. Residents in some HDB estates have raised concerns about noise. In response, the government has committed to:

  • Building more sheltered and indoor facilities away from residential blocks.
  • Implementing noise mitigation measures.
  • Selecting future sites that balance accessibility with the need to minimize disturbance to neighbors.

Future Sports Hubs

Beyond standalone courts, pickleball will be integrated into upcoming regional sports centers. The Punggol Regional Sport Centre, expected to open within a year, will feature a team sports hall with three multi-purpose courts. Other major developments include refreshed facilities at Hougang and Queenstown, and the future Toa Payoh Integrated Development scheduled for 2030.

How to Book a Pickleball Court in Singapore

For those looking to play, bookings are managed through the MyActiveSG+ platform. Due to high demand, peak-hour slots are often allocated via a balloting system that opens 14 days in advance, while non-peak slots remain available on a first-come, first-served basis.
