The "Pop-Pop" Diplomacy: Why Vietnam is Asia’s Undisputed Pickleball Hub

Updated 6 min read

For the uninitiated, the rhythmic "pop-pop" echoing through the streets of Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City might sound like a new industrial pulse. But to the millions of Vietnamese who have picked up a paddle, it is the sound of a sporting revolution. In less than two years, Vietnam has transformed from a curious observer into the undisputed epicenter of pickleball in Asia.

The Data Behind the Boom

According to a 2025 report by UPA Asia and YouGov, Vietnam’s pickleball awareness grew by 152% between 2024 and 2025 (the highest growth rate on the continent). With over 16% of the population playing at least once a month, Vietnam’s participation rate dwarfs that of China (4.4%) and its Southeast Asian neighbors.

Due to this “pickle-boom”, many investors are converting traditional football pitches and aging tennis courts into high-density pickleball complexes. It is estimated that Ho Chi Minh City alone now boasts over 1,000 court complexes, reflecting a land-use efficiency that traditional sports simply cannot match.

This surge in popularity can also be seen in the aggressive spending habits of Vietnamese consumers on e-commerce platforms. According to data from the Metric, shoppers spent VND 511 billion ($20.1 million) on pickleball gear across Shopee, TikTok Shop, Lazada, and Tiki in the first half of 2025 alone. This represents a staggering 13-fold increase in revenue compared to the same period in 2024.

The sheer volume of trade is equally impressive, with over 2.4 million pickleball products sold in just six months (a 154% increase in quantity). Data suggests that while entry-level gear is popular, there is a significant trend toward professional-grade equipment. High-end paddles priced between VND 2 million and 5 million are among the top sellers, indicating that the Vietnamese consumer is investing heavily in the sport’s long-term lifestyle.

The Perfect Storm in Vietnam

Several factors have converged to make Vietnam the ideal host for the sport, creating a synergy between existing athletic traditions and modern social trends.

Racket Sport Heritage

Vietnam possesses a deep-rooted cultural affinity for badminton and table tennis, which are staples of neighborhood parks and schools. Because the technical fundamentals of pickleball (e.g. hand-eye coordination, quick reflexes at the net, and "touch" shots) mirror these established sports, the transition is seamless.

This ready-made talent pool is evidenced by the rapid success of local icons like Trịnh Linh Giang and Lý Hoàng Nam. These athletes have leveraged their professional tennis foundations to dominate Asian rankings, proving that Vietnam’s competitive edge is built on decades of racket-sport excellence.

The "Lifestyle" Factor & Social Visibility

In Vietnam, pickleball has become a high-visibility social "runway" and a core part of a modern, aspirational lifestyle. The market for specialized apparel and shoes surged by over 450% in 2025 as courts are transformed into social hubs where fashion meets fitness.

The sport’s unique ability to bridge generational gaps (allowing young professionals to play alongside their parents) has made it a primary vehicle for social networking and community bonding. This "lifestyle" element ensures the sport stays relevant on social media feeds, further driving its viral expansion.

Hospitality & Infrastructure

Vietnam has rapidly professionalized its infrastructure to cater to both the elite traveler and the international pro circuit. As noted by global stars like Zane Navratil, the level of hospitality is unmatched in the region. This includes expedited VIP airport clearances and the development of world-class resort venues.

Coastal hubs like Da Nang and Quang Nam have integrated professional-grade courts into luxury resorts, creating a "sport-tourism" model that appeals to high-spending international visitors. By offering high-end complexes that include physical therapy, luxury dining, and retail, Vietnam is positioning itself as the premier "service-first" destination for the global pickleball community.

2026: A Year of International Prestige

As we move through 2026, Vietnam has solidified its position as the primary anchor for the PPA Tour Asia, with a calendar that continues to set the benchmark for the sport's global expansion.

  • MB Hanoi Cup (April 1–5, 2026): Currently underway at the My Dinh Indoor Athletics Arena, this 1000-point event marks a historic milestone as World No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters makes her international competition debut. Teaming up with Ben Johns and Anna Bright, Waters’ presence has elevated the tournament into a global spectacle, proving that Vietnam’s northern capital is now a mandatory stop for the world's elite players.
  • PPA Asia 500 Ho Chi Minh City Open (August 6–9, 2026): Returning to the southern hub where the craze first ignited, this mid-year championship is expected to draw over 500 professional and amateur athletes. The event will serve as a high-stakes qualifier for the season-ending Slams, further embedding professional standards into the local community.
  • Pickleball Getaways & Elite Coaching (February – May 2026): Beyond traditional tournaments, 2026 has seen the rise of "luxury training tourism." High-profile tours, including sessions co-founded by Dekel Bar, have utilized 5-star venues like the New World Hoiana Beach Resort to offer deep-dive instructional camps. These events combine world-class coaching with cultural exploration, cementing Vietnam’s reputation as the "destination of choice" for the global pickleball enthusiast.

The Growing Pains: Noise and Regulation

The most prominent is noise pollution. The high-pitched "pop" of the plastic ball has led to a surge in grievances on the "iHanoi" app, with residents in dense urban areas labeling it an "acoustic hazard". It's also an issue that many neighborhoods in Malaysia and Singapore face.

Furthermore, the sport faces an identity crisis in a country where "football is king." Critics argue the boom is a "rich person's fad," and the lack of a formal National Pickleball Federation means coaching certifications and court safety standards remain inconsistent.

Vietnam has Moved Beyond the "Fad" Phase

By integrating the sport into its urban lifestyle, setting world attendance records, and leveraging its existing racket-sport talent, the country has created a blueprint for Asian growth. As the PPA Tour unifies global rankings in 2026, Vietnam is hosting the sport's future.
